Krishnanagar rail station set for modern revamp

Krishnanagar railway station, steeped in history and situated in Kolkata, is on the cusp of a substantial makeover aimed at enhancing the travel journey for countless passengers. This initiative forms a part of the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 6, 2023. This scheme marks a significant leap towards revitalising railway station infrastructure and services across the country.

Launched through a virtual event by the Prime Minister, the scheme kicks off the redevelopment of 508 railway stations nationwide. Its central objective is to establish comprehensive facilities under one roof, with an emphasis on multi-modal integration, structural enhancement, and seamless integration with the urban surroundings.

The initiative aspires to elevate railway stations to world-class standards, affording passengers unmatched amenities and convenience. This scheme encompasses 37 railway stations in West Bengal, including 21 under the Eastern Railway and 16 under the North East Frontier Railway Jurisdiction.

Among these transformations, Krishnanagar City Junction station stands out due to its deep historical roots, featuring palaces, churches, clay toys, and the prestigious Raj Rajeshwary Jagatdhatri Puja festival. The redevelopment of Krishnanagar City Station, with a budget of Rs 296.2 million, envisages modernising facilities while preserving the city's heritage and architectural treasures.

The impending upgrades include constructing a new shade, installing a foot over bridge, modifying the entrance canopy, revamping waiting halls and restrooms, and introducing lifts and escalators for improved accessibility. This renewal aligns with the Prime Minister's vision of providing state-of-the-art amenities to passengers while retaining the essence of the city's cultural identity.
