Lucknow Metro to Extend Services Up to Vasant Kunj

The second phase of the Lucknow Metro project has received significant approval from the state government, paving the way for an 11.2-kilometre expansion connecting Charbagh to Vasant Kunj. The proposal, which was forwarded to the central government, now awaits approval from the Public Investment Board (PIB) and the Union Cabinet before construction and tendering can begin. Officials are expecting a key PIB meeting by the end of April, which could trigger the formal approval of the project. The upcoming phase aims to create a seamless, multimodal urban mobility network to ease traffic congestion in Lucknow's busiest areas and align with broader goals for eco-friendly infrastructure development.

Senior officials from the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) shared that the new corridor will include 12 metro stations, seven of which will be underground and five elevated. The design plans to integrate accessibility and speed while minimizing the urban footprint and environmental impact. According to the project details, the underground section, spanning approximately 6.8 kilometres, will pass through densely populated and commercially significant areas, including Charbagh, Gautam Buddha Marg, Aminabad, Pandeyganj, City Railway Station, Medical Chauraha, and Chowk. These areas, central to old Lucknow, require efficient public transport solutions to reduce pressure on surface roads, especially in regions lacking sufficient bus and autorickshaw services.

The elevated section will extend metro access to Thakurganj, Balaganj, Musabagh, Sarfarazganj, and Vasant Kunj, improving connectivity to residential and emerging institutional hubs on the western side of the city. A dedicated metro depot is planned at Vasant Kunj to support maintenance and depot-level operations, ensuring the smooth operation of the line once it is functional.

Officials involved in the planning process mentioned that although the full construction timeline is projected to be six years, efforts are being made to reduce the schedule to four years, contingent upon timely financial approval from the Centre. This urgency reflects the state’s commitment to enhancing Lucknow's public transport system and aligning with national urban development goals, particularly those focused on low-carbon and integrated mobility. The expansion will complement the 22.87-kilometre North-South corridor currently operational, connecting Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport to Munshi Pulia. This operational corridor has already eased daily commutes and reduced reliance on private vehicles, contributing to modest but measurable reductions in local air pollution and congestion.

Once completed, the second phase will increase the total network length to over 34 kilometres, significantly improving coverage across key residential, commercial, and institutional zones. Urban planners view this expansion as a step towards creating a more connected, inclusive, and resilient city, capable of addressing both demographic pressures and climate-induced challenges, such as rising vehicular emissions. Transport experts have praised the project’s potential to shift travel behavior, particularly by encouraging commuters to switch from private vehicles to public transit. If successful, this modal shift could help reduce the city's transport-related carbon footprint, contributing to India’s net-zero vision.

Moreover, with stations located in areas like Aminabad and Chowk, where narrow lanes and pedestrian overcrowding are common, metro access is expected to improve mobility for senior citizens, students, and daily wage earners. The project is also expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and stimulate economic activity in surrounding areas, particularly through transit-oriented development initiatives. Officials involved in the planning emphasized that this expansion is not just about improving transport, but also about driving equitable urban growth through better access and opportunity. If executed as planned, the Charbagh to Vasant Kunj metro corridor will mark a significant milestone in Lucknow's urban evolution—balancing growth with environmental responsibility and laying the foundation for a more sustainable and commuter-friendly future.
