Madurai Metro Alignment Reviewed Amid NHAI Underpass Plan

An inspection was conducted to assess the feasibility of altering the elevated metro corridor in Tirumangalam, including pillars and stations, due to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) constructing underpasses, CMRL Director (Projects) T. Archunan stated.
On Saturday, Mr. Archunan, accompanied by NHAI officials, visited the site to examine potential changes in the metro alignment. He explained that the original Madurai Metro Rail Project plan positioned the corridor along the centre of the NH in Tirumangalam. However, NHAI has recently proposed constructing two vehicular underpasses at the SIPCOT industrial estate and Thoppur junctions.
During the inspection, officials explored options such as raising metro pillars and stations or altering the alignment. Mr. Archunan noted that any change could also require land acquisition.
He added that a final decision will be made after further discussions with NHAI officials.
The Tamil Nadu government’s 32-km Madurai Metro Rail Project, featuring 26 stations, is being implemented under the supervision of Chennai Metro Rail Limited.
