New Jogeshwari Terminus Set to Open This Year

The new rail terminus at Jogeshwari, located between Ram Mandir and Jogeshwari stations, is expected to become operational within the next six months. The terminus, which is situated near a former cement warehouse once operated by the railways, has been under construction for nearly two years at an estimated cost of Rs 690 million. The facility is expected to ease the pressure on the existing terminuses at Dadar, Bandra, and Mumbai Central by increasing train services.

The construction work has progressed significantly, with key milestones such as the completion of a labour shed and on-going work on the cover shed, service building, platform, and station building. Tracks are also being laid as part of the development. The island platforms, which will accommodate trains arriving from either side, are nearly ready. The island platform is 600 metre long, 12 metre wide, and designed to accommodate 24-coach trains. Additionally, the terminus will feature two berthing lines and a Power Run Down line for shunting movements, along with watering facilities for coaches.

Western Railway officials have set a target for 70-75 per cent completion of the project by the end of March. They are hopeful that the major portion of civil works will be completed by summer. The new terminus is designed to improve the overall train operations and ease congestion, benefiting passengers from both the western and eastern suburbs.

While the development has been welcomed by many, there are concerns regarding the scheduling of trains. The potential for crowding, especially during peak hours when multiple trains may arrive or depart at the same time, could pose challenges for passengers with luggage.
