North Western Railway to focus on renewable energy use at stations

The North Western Railway (NWR) told the media that the region has been focusing more on the use of solar power, wind energy, and electricity at stations across the region and for tracks.

A total of 7126 kWp capacity solar panels have been established in this region. A 26 megawatt (MW) windmill is also operating in Jaisalmer, which produces about 73 mega units of energy yearly.

Chief public relations officer for NWR, Captain Shashi Kiran, told the media that in the past, a lot of work has been accomplished in this area on solar energy. Almost 7126 kWp capacity solar panels have been established upon this railway. Along with safeguarding the environment, the revenue of about Rs 5 crore is also being saved every year. Energy is being acquired by establishing high-capacity solar panels at Jaipur, Ajmer, and Jodhpur stations under the green energy initiative.

Officials further said 103 lakh units of electricity are being saved annually, with 100% use of LED lighting in the NWR.

Officials said bottle crushers have also been established at railway stations in Bikaner, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Hisar, Lalgarh, Gandhinagar, Alwar, and Jaisalmer to reduce plastic waste. Bottle crusher plants will also be established in more stations for plastic waste disposal.

The NWR has obtained green ratings from Indian Green Building Council for ten buildings across the region, along with the approval to operate certificates for 33 railway stations from the state pollution control board.
