Railways strengthen supervision over wagons headed for Bangladesh

The Indian Railways has increased its oversight of rail freight going for Bangladesh by requiring that any organisation that books a wagon for the neighbouring nation specify the product being conveyed.

This is being done to step up the fight against the "indent mafia," which reserves wagons in advance and makes money off of the shortage.

An indent is a reservation request made by a customer who wants to use the railroad wagons to deliver goods.

The railways made it mandatory to submit a letter of credit (LC) while making an indent earlier this year. The Indian Railways' Freight Operations Information System receives the details of the LC. These details include the LC number, issue and expiration dates, bank name and beneficiary, and the amount of weight transferred by any other means of transportation on the same LC.

According to the updated regulations, a divot may be made after feeding in the goods being transported and the route.
