Shyam Metalics to Start Wagon Manufacturing at Kharagpur Plant

Shyam Metalics and Energy Limited, a leading Indian metal company, announced its entry into wagon manufacturing with a new greenfield facility at Kharagpur, West Bengal. The facility, developed by its subsidiary Ramsarup Industries Limited, is scheduled to commence operations by March 2026.

The plant will be built in two phases, initially producing 2,400 wagons per year and eventually doubling to 4,800. It will manufacture various types of rolling stock, including flat, open, box, hopper covered, tank, and specialised wagons.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the facility will feature rooftop solar installations for clean energy, an on-site residential colony, and recreational amenities. It employs a world-class “Uni-Flow” manufacturing layout to enhance efficiency and supports the Government of India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives through the use of domestically manufactured equipment.

The site benefits from excellent connectivity via two national highways and proximity to a major port. Integrated infrastructure such as an operational railway siding, captive power facilities, and access to steel products from Shyam Metalics’ flagship plant enhance operational efficiency.

This venture diversifies Shyam Metalics’ portfolio beyond steel and forms a key part of its five-year capital expenditure roadmap aimed at supporting India’s infrastructure growth and industrial self-reliance.
