Bangladesh to set up seven land ports with northeast India

Bangladesh is setting up seven land ports with the northeastern part of India’s Seven Sisters for good land connectivity.

At least seven land ports are being established with Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya.

Bangladesh already has five land ports with Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam. Among them, land ports of Nakugaon and Tamabil join Bangladesh with Meghalaya; land port of Sonahat joins with Dhubri in Assam, and land ports of Akhaura and Bibirbazar join Bangladesh with Tripura.

As per the Bangladesh land port authority (BLPA) officials, the upcoming ports with India will increase trade, commerce, and connectivity with Seven Sisters states.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury told the media that these land ports will boost our regional connectivity, commerce, and trade.

The state minister added in 2001, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina established the land port authority when she was prime minister in her first term.

Khalid said that we strive to boost secure and disciplined business with neighboring countries. When the land port's construction work is finished it will help improve our national economy.

The new land ports will benefit India very much as the northeast part of India is geographically challenging for other Indian states to reach.

So, through these land ports, if India gets transshipment from Bangladesh in the future, it will support the growth of India’s Seven Sisters states.

From these land ports by exporting daily necessities and goods, Bangladesh will also benefit.

According to the officials, all the seven ports construction work is currently underway and the construction process has gained momentum recently.

After discussions at several high-level meetings, both Bangladesh and India had agreed to strengthen connectivity with India's northeastern part, Sources said.
