DP World to Develop Kandla Container Terminal

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and DP World have signed a concession agreement for the development of the Tuna Tekra all-weather deep container terminal at Kandla port. DP World will invest Rs 45 million in the project, resulting in a 1,100-meter-long berth capable of handling next-generation vessels. Once completed, the terminal will have an annual capacity of 2.19 million TEUs. This development, part of the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) initiative, is expected to significantly reduce trade time between India and Europe compared to the Suez Route.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the foundation laying ceremony, emphasised the transformational impact of IMEC, which includes mega ports, international container transshipment ports, island development, inland waterways development, multimodal hub development, and more. These initiatives, along with programs like Sagarmala and PM GatiShakti, aim to enhance coastal infrastructure, foster employment growth, and improve the quality of life for people in these regions.
