Kandla Port Sets New Record With 81,024-Tonne Coal Discharge

Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla has set a new benchmark by discharging 81,024 tonnes of coal in just 24 hours from the vessel M V MARATHOS at Cargo Berth No. 7 — the highest single-day coal discharge recorded at one of India’s busiest ports.

The achievement follows another milestone earlier in the week. On 17 November, DPA Kandla handled 40 ships in a single day, surpassing its previous record of 38 vessels set in December 2023. The back-to-back records underscore the port’s improving efficiency and its growing capability to manage heavy cargo volumes smoothly.

Celebrating the accomplishment, DPA Kandla said on X: “Another record at DPA Kandla! DPA has achieved a record coal discharge of 81,024 tons in just 24 hours at Cargo Berth No. 7 with M.V. MARATHOS — a benchmark of unmatched speed, precision and teamwork.” The authority described the performance as a testament to its operational excellence and maritime leadership.

DPA highlighted the involvement of several partners in executing the operation. These included Shree Ashapura Stevedores from the Ashapura Shipping Group; Seascape Shipping Agency India Pvt Ltd as the vessel agent; Shri Balaji Infraport, also from the Ashapura Shipping Group, as the customs house agent; and Balaji Malts Private Limited as the importer. Seamless coordination among these teams ensured completion of the discharge within a tight window.

The previous feat of managing 40 ships in 24 hours similarly relied on close coordination among marine, traffic and operational teams. Port officials said the achievement demonstrated DPA Kandla’s ability to handle heavy vessel traffic without delays, supported by careful planning and constant monitoring to avoid congestion and maintain safety.

Commenting on the landmark accomplishments, Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of DPA, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, port users, trade unions, employees and shramiks for their support. He also praised the dedicated efforts of the Traffic Manager, Deputy Conservator, operational teams and DPA pilots. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways highlighted his remarks on X.
