Russian Crude Tanker Nears Mundra Ahead of Adani Ban

A tanker carrying Russian crude was approaching Adani Group’s Mundra port on Monday, marking one of the last sanctioned vessels expected to unload at the facility before a company-wide ban takes effect. The Spartan, a Suezmax tanker blacklisted last year by the United Kingdom and the European Union for transporting Russian oil, is carrying at least one million barrels of Urals crude. Shipping data from Bloomberg, Kpler, and Vortexa indicated the vessel was near a discharge point servicing HPCL-Mittal Energy (HMEL).
On 11 September, Adani Group announced it would no longer permit tankers sanctioned by Western nations to enter any of its ports. The ban came into effect immediately but excluded vessels already en route, a company spokesperson told Bloomberg.
Over the past eight months, Mundra port has received around 180,000 barrels per day of Russian crude, underscoring India’s growing role as a major buyer of discounted Russian oil amid sanctions following the Ukraine conflict.
