Srijan Group to Revive Kolkata’s Armenian Ghat

Srijan Group has taken formal possession of the historic Armenian Ghat precinct on Strand Road, Kolkata, after signing a 60-year lease agreement with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK).

Spread across approximately 16,507 sq m, the project marks the beginning of a major riverfront rejuvenation initiative aimed at transforming a neglected stretch of the Hooghly waterfront into a commercial and leisure destination while preserving its heritage character.

The precinct comprises several historically significant maritime structures, including the erstwhile Strand Warehouse, Jetty Shed 1, Jetty Workshop and Armenian Warehouse. Srijan Group plans to adopt an adaptive-reuse approach, integrating these heritage assets with contemporary spaces for high-street retail, Grade-A office spaces, premium hospitality and riverfront cafés.

Commenting on the development, Arjun Agarwal, Associate Director, Srijan Realty, said, “The formal handover of the Armenian Ghat precinct is a moment of profound responsibility and pride for the Srijan Group. This is not merely a real estate acquisition; it is an exercise in custodial stewardship. Our vision is to respectfully breathe new life into this monumental address while balancing heritage conservation with contemporary urban development.”

He added that the project aims to reconnect citizens with the riverfront, revive Kolkata’s maritime identity and create a lasting cultural and economic asset for the city.

Rathendra Raman, Chairperson, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, said that revitalising historic port assets through structured public-private partnerships remains a strategic priority for the port authority. He noted that the collaboration with Srijan Group would help unlock the value of Kolkata’s historic riverfront while promoting tourism, heritage conservation and urban regeneration.

The project is expected to emerge as a landmark destination and contribute to the economic and tourism landscape of Kolkata.

"Join industry leaders at RAHSTA Expo, India's premier platform for roads, highways and traffic infrastructure. Register now to explore innovations, network with experts and shape the future of mobility."
