Mangaluru civic body asks waste generators to build treatment units

The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has issued a strict three-month deadline to every solid bulk producer in the city to start wet waste treatment in their buildings and build an on-site waste treatment composting system by October 31.

MCC commissioner Akshay Sridhar held a conference at the Mangala Auditorium of MCC regarding the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and Mangaluru City Corporation Solid Waste Treatment Bylaws.

The meeting focused on the investigation of the writ petition concerning Mangalore Municipal Solid Waste Management registered in the High Court.

The meeting also reviewed the progress made in the execution of the Solid Waste Regulations, which the government needs to investigate.

The attendees got to know about the period in which the Waste Management directives had to be executed.

It is mandatory for apartments/flats over 30 households and establishments (hospitals, lodges, wedding halls, hotels, catering, etc.) to build an On-Site Composting Unit and treat the waste at the source.

Approved by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), directions were issued to construct composting systems utilising the technology to treat wet waste developed by the companies.

Considering the severity of the waste disposal system recently, every stakeholder is issued a strict three-month period to start wet waste treatment in their buildings.
