NMPL launches zero crystalline silica surface technology

Nemmali Mining (NMPL) has launched Zero Crystalline Silica™ Surface Technology, which it describes as India's first engineered surface material that eliminates crystalline silica from its composition, offering an alternative to conventional quartz-based engineered stone.

The company said the technology addresses health concerns associated with respirable crystalline silica generated during the cutting, polishing, fabrication and installation of engineered stone. Developed using an advanced upcycling process, the material is designed to reduce dependence on natural quartz mining while promoting resource efficiency and circular economy practices.

According to NMPL, the technology has been independently validated through X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, which confirmed the absence of crystalline silica, while chemical composition was verified through X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis by testing and certification company SGS.

Keerthy Reddy, Director, NMPL, said the innovation is intended to help manufacturers meet evolving workplace safety requirements without compromising product quality or performance.

The launch comes amid tightening global regulations on crystalline silica exposure. Australia has prohibited engineered stone containing crystalline silica, while regulators in Europe and the United States are strengthening occupational safety standards for the sector.

India is among the world's largest producers and exporters of engineered stone, supplying residential, commercial and hospitality projects across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. According to industry estimates cited by the company, the global engineered stone market is valued at more than USD 25 billion.
