Captive and Commercial Mines Cross 200 mn t Coal Milestone

India's coal sector reached a milestone when captive, commercial and other mines crossed the landmark of 200 million tonnes (mn t) of coal production on 11 March 2026 during FY 2025–26. The achievement reflected coordinated efforts by Central and State Public Sector Undertakings and private participants. It underlined sustained expansion in domestic coal output.

Captive and commercial mines accounted for 194.17 mn t while other mines contributed 6.06 mn t, taking overall production beyond the historic 200 mn t mark. Coal production for FY 2025–26 exceeded the total for FY 2024–25 of 197.32 mn t on seven March 2026, achieving the milestone 24 days ahead of the previous year. The sector recorded a year on year growth of 10.56 per cent during the same period.

Coal dispatch also maintained an upward trajectory, registering a 7.71 per cent year on year increase from 182.98 mn t to 197.09 mn t. The sustained rise in dispatch indicated growing capacity to meet the country's energy requirements and to ensure reliable supply to major consuming sectors. This performance reflected operational improvements and logistical support across the supply chain.

The Ministry of Coal indicated that further advancement of captive and commercial mining would remain a policy priority supported by technological innovation and workforce dedication. Forward looking measures and regulatory support were cited as drivers of continued expansion. The ministry linked these developments to national objectives including Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

The milestone was presented as the result of collaborative effort by CPSUs, SPSUs and private sector participants and was described as reinforcing coal's pivotal role in supporting industrial progress. Continued monitoring and policy refinement were described as necessary to sustain momentum and to meet future demand.
