Coal Ministry targets 100 mt coal gasification by 2030

As a way to reinforce the commitment of the government towards green initiatives in the coal sector, Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs)- Coal India Limited (CIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to collaborate for coal gasification since the Ministry has targeted 100 million tonne (mt) by end of the decade.

In a statement, the Ministry said that the Coal Ministry is aiming to have 100 mt coal gasification by the year 2030 via sustainable utilisation. Due to this the CIL took up four projects, announced in the Union Budget of 2022-23 to assist in the technical and financial viability of the projects.

Experts have stated that for coal gasification and carbon capture the country should bank on indigenous technology for making it reliable as well as affordable.

In August 2020, the Coal Minister, Pralhad Joshi told the media that the country aims the achievement of 100 mt coal gasification by 2030 with investments worth Rs four lakh crore. Establishing a plant is capital-intensive and needs a minimum of 48 months. With limited experience, ensuring the success of initial projects is crucial for the national mission.

For the implementation of the project, the establishment of gasification projects in phases is planned. Phase I is based on low ash coal which is available in CIL. The mining giant shall take care of the mining of coal and marketing.
