Union Minister Visits Eastern Coalfields Limited

Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey visited Eastern Coalfields Limited on 13 May 2026 to review operational achievements, ongoing initiatives and the strategic roadmap for future growth. He visited the Kunustoria Area and was received by the chairman and managing director, the director of finance, directors for human resources and technical affairs, senior executives and departmental heads. A ceremonial guard of honour preceded discussions on production, dispatch, mine safety, operational efficiency and sustainable development.

The minister emphasised balancing coal production with environmental responsibility and urged adoption of modern, sustainable and eco-conscious mining practices alongside technological advancement and efficient resource utilisation. He underlined improvement in safety standards to strengthen operational capabilities and acknowledged the company's commendable performance during the financial year 2025-26 despite challenges. He conveyed appreciation for the workforce and encouraged consolidation of gains.

He commended scientific mine closure activities focused on reclamation and repurposing of mined out land and said such work aids ecological restoration, sustainable land use and conservation. He highlighted benefits for local communities and observed that responsible closure practices create opportunities for community infrastructure and green projects. He recommended integrating reclamation plans with regional development strategies.

The minister welcomed initiatives to improve coal transportation through First Mile Connectivity projects to reduce air pollution, cut road dependence and improve logistical efficiency for faster and safer evacuation of coal. He noted expansion of solar energy installations and steps to integrate renewable energy within mining operations as measures to optimise efficiency while lowering carbon emissions. He advised systematic and periodic stock verification to ensure accuracy of declared coal stock and linked ECL's role to national energy security amid developments in West Asia.

He offered policy guidance and strategic inputs aimed at enhancing productivity and sustaining long term growth while reiterating the government's commitment to strengthen India's energy security. Recognising Eastern Coalfields Limited as a longstanding subsidiary of Coal India Limited, he expressed confidence in the company's future prospects and contribution to national coal and energy requirements.
