Amara Raja bags order to set up green hydrogen fueling station

National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has awarded a green hydrogen project to Amara Raja Power Systems to set up India's first green hydrogen fueling station in Leh, Ladakh.

The company said that the project aims at introducing emission-free transport in and around Leh with a plan to test five hydrogen fuel cell buses in the entire region.

This pilot project will generate nearly 80 kg daily of 99.97% pure hydrogen, which will be compressed, stored, and dispensed. Here, green hydrogen is formed by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen through the process of electrolysis powered by electricity generated by renewable energy sources.

NTPC Renewable Energy will be responsible for installing a dedicated 1.25 MW solar power plant to power the newly proposed hydrogen fueling station.

Amara Raja Power Systems is undertaking complete engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project to set up a standalone green hydrogen fuel station, including parking spaces, a control room, amenities, fuel storage and dispensing system.

The company has undertaken operations and maintenance (O&M) activities for three years from the proposed date of project commissioning.

The company told the media that the pilot project would be set up in extreme conditions at 3,600 m height above sea level with a temperature variation of -14 degrees to +20 degrees C.

The project is part of India’s National Hydrogen Energy Mission and will be a precursor to large-scale green hydrogen mobility and storage projects. The project will be valuable for studying and deploying multiple fueling stations across the country.
