Centre Reviews Lakshadweep Power Sector and Focuses on Renewable Energy

The Union government has proposed measures to strengthen Lakshadweep’s power sector, focusing on a transition from diesel-based electricity generation to renewable energy sources, as stated by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal during a review meeting in Kavaratti.

The review, which was attended by Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Patel along with senior officials from the Union Territory administration, Government of India, and Power Finance Corporation (PFC), discussed the performance of the electricity department, the demand-supply balance, and on-going renewable energy projects, including ground-mounted and floating solar power installations.

Patel requested central approval for a proposed submarine cable project to interconnect the islands and ensure a reliable power supply, noting that a detailed project proposal would be submitted soon. He also sought support for modernizing the transmission and distribution system under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

The Union Minister highlighted the importance of reducing electricity costs by increasing renewable energy capacity, which would be supported by battery energy storage systems to maintain grid stability. He suggested that islands such as Agatti-Bangaram, Minicoy, and Kadmat be developed as pilot projects for greening, with necessary support from the Ministry of Power.

The discussion also covered potential pilot projects for solar-based electric vehicle charging stations and the conversion of diesel-powered boats to cleaner alternatives. The Centre reiterated its commitment to supporting the development of Lakshadweep’s power sector and facilitating the transition to sustainable energy solutions.
