HCC Wins Rs 1.27 Billion Bhutan Hydro Contract

Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has secured a contract worth Rs 1.27 billion (Rs 1.27 bn) from Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL) of Bhutan for construction works related to the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. The scope includes construction of diversion tunnels, hydromechanical gates and cofferdams and the contract is scheduled for completion within nine months. The award follows WHPL's technical and financial evaluation and reflects HCC's expertise in executing complex hydroelectric works in challenging geographies.

The diversion works are described as critical to enabling the early commencement of the project's principal civil works and to maintaining the overall implementation schedule of the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project. The contract value and expedited nine-month timeframe underline the priority accorded to these enabling works within the wider project plan.

Bhutan's hydropower sector is set to expand under the country's 13th Five-Year Plan covering 2024 to 2029, with the government targeting 6,000 MW of installed capacity and continued investment in large hydroelectric projects. The award is cited as part of the broader momentum in the region's power infrastructure development.

HCC's presence in Bhutan for over three decades has contributed to the kingdom's hydropower capacity through projects including Tala (1,020 MW), Kurichu (60 MW), Punatsangchhu-1 (1,200 MW), Dagachhu (114 MW) and Nikachhu (118 MW). The company has also executed 26 per cent of India's installed hydropower capacity and has a long record in nuclear power generation, expressways, tunnelling and bridge construction.

With an engineering heritage of nearly 100 years, HCC positions itself as a builder of responsible infrastructure and continues to serve the transportation, power and water sectors. The company description supplied with the contract award reiterates its role across major national projects and its continued focus on executing complex works in demanding environments.
