India First Solar Powered Water Purification Van JAL-YAAN Launched

India has introduced its first solar integrated, self powered water purification van, named JAL-YAAN, developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSIR-CSMCRI) in collaboration with Rite Water Solutions. The vehicle marks a milestone in mobile water treatment and is designed to extend safe drinking water access to communities with limited infrastructure.

JAL-YAAN combines advanced multi stage purification technology with photovoltaic power systems so it can operate independently while treating water drawn from multiple sources such as surface, ground and stored supplies. The system features multi stage filtration and disinfection modules tailored to local source quality. Its compact chassis and self contained energy arrangement make it suitable for remote locations, emergency response and areas facing acute water quality concerns.

The adoption of renewable energy for on site treatment reduces reliance on grid power and supports sustainable water management practices, lowering the environmental footprint of temporary supply operations. By integrating research grade treatment processes into a deployable platform, the project demonstrates how laboratory innovation can be translated into field ready solutions. Local operators can maintain and deploy the unit with routine servicing and modest logistical support.

The collaboration between CSIR-CSMCRI and Rite Water Solutions reflects a growing trend of pairing public research institutions with industry partners to accelerate practical deployment. Developers stated the technology will support rural communities, disaster relief operations and sites requiring rapid establishment of potable water facilities, enhancing preparedness and response capabilities. Its mobility allows rapid repositioning to respond to shifting demand and to support targeted interventions.
