India’s Power Sector Achievements in FY 2024-25

India’s power sector witnessed historic advancements in FY 2024-25, achieving record energy generation, transmission, and distribution milestones. From meeting an all-time high power demand of 250 GW to reducing national energy shortages to just 0.1%, the sector demonstrated remarkable resilience and commitment to sustainable growth. This article outlines key achievements across power supply, generation, transmission, distribution, and energy conservation.

India successfully met a peak power demand of 250 GW in FY 2024-25, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector. Energy shortages were drastically reduced to 0.1%, a remarkable improvement from the 4.2% recorded in 2013-14. Additionally, per capita electricity consumption surged to 1,395 kWh in 2023-24, reflecting a 45.8% increase from the 957 kWh recorded in 2013-14. The nation achieved universal electrification, ensuring that every village and household now has access to electricity. Power availability has also improved considerably, with rural areas receiving an average of 21.9 hours of electricity per day, compared to just 12.5 hours in 2014, while urban areas now enjoy 23.4 hours of uninterrupted power supply.

The total installed power generation capacity expanded by 83.8%, rising from 249 GW in March 2014 to 457 GW in November 2024. A significant contributor to this growth has been the rapid expansion of renewable energy. Since April 2014, India has added 129 GW of renewable energy capacity, including 91 GW of solar power, 27 GW of wind power, 3.2 GW of biomass, 1.3 GW of small hydro, and 6.3 GW of large hydro.
