NHPC forms MOU to create test projects for green hydrogen

The Leh and Kargil districts of the UT of Ladakh have signed two memorandums of understanding for the development of prototype green hydrogen technologies, according to NHPC, the state-owned hydropower powerhouse. This will help lower the power sector's carbon impact.

In accordance with the official news release, NHPC will create a pilot green hydrogen fuel cell based microgrid that includes hydrogen production to satisfy its own internal power needs at the Nimmo Bazgo power station in Leh.

According to the statement, the hydrogen produced in Kargil would be used in fuel cells for transportation that can power two buses for up to eight hours in the Kargil area.

R K Mathur, the lieutenant governor of the UT of Ladakh, presided over the signing of the MOU. The future MOU will be signed separately. NHpc plants to upsize hydrogen production on a commercial scale in order to supply the hydrogen demands to the Ladakh region in several sectors such as mobility, transportation, heating, and micro-grid The report added that the two most important projects would lay out a plan for the development of green hydrogen in the future, reduce carbon emissions in the transportation and heating industries, and encourage long-term investment in the hydrogen economy by generating new sources of income and employment opportunities.
