Solmacher Signs Huawei Deal For 40 MWh BESS In Maldives

Solmacher Solar Energy has signed an agreement with Huawei Digital Power for the supply of a 40 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) and utility and commercial and industrial inverters for a smart microgrid project in the Maldives. The contract covers equipment and integration services for the Royal Rosewood Resort Island project, which is intended to combine onshore renewable generation with storage and existing thermal generation. The companies positioned the project as a step towards larger-scale renewable deployment for resort and island energy systems.

The microgrid will combine a 16 megawatt peak (MWp) solar farm, a 40 MWh BESS and diesel generators (DGs) and is expected to be the largest project of its kind in the Maldives. The system design aims to enable more than 70 per cent of the energy demand at the resort island to be met through renewable energy sources while ensuring continuous supply when solar output varies. Project planners included inverter capacity to manage grid stability and the transition between solar, storage and DGs.

The agreement covers supply of Huawei Digital Power's energy storage and inverter solutions to support the integration of solar generation with energy storage and existing diesel generation. The technical scope includes system control, power conversion and installation services to enable coordinated operation across generation and storage assets. Operators will be able to use stored energy to smooth peaks and reduce reliance on diesel during daylight and evening demand cycles.

The memorandum was signed by Wassim Ayoubi, founder and managing director of Solmacher Solar Energy, and Wang Qiang, managing director of Huawei Digital Power for the Multi-GCC Representative Office, formalising the commercial terms and delivery timetable. Project backers expect the deployment to bolster resilience and reduce fuel consumption for the resort island's power supply. The initiative adds to a growing pipeline of grid?scale storage projects serving tourism and island communities in South Asia.
