Tata Power Plans January 2028 Commissioning Of Odisha Wafer Ingot Facility

Tata Power has announced plans to commission a 10 GW solar wafer and ingot manufacturing facility in Odisha by January 2028, aiming to bolster domestic photovoltaic (PV) component production. The company said it had acquired the project land and initiated preliminary development activities, clearing the way for full construction later this year. The project represents a major investment in India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem and is intended to enhance self-reliance in upstream clean energy supply chains.

Tata Power said environmental clearances, water arrangements and other statutory approvals were underway as the company prepared the site for construction. Its chief executive, Praveer Sinha, indicated that construction was expected to commence in October 2026 with commercial operations targeted for January 2028. The company described the schedule as achievable given current preparatory progress and ongoing coordination with state authorities. The project is expected to create local employment opportunities and involve coordination with domestic suppliers during construction.

The facility will be developed in two phases, each with a capacity of 5 GW, to achieve a combined 10 GW output on completion. This scale will place the plant among the largest integrated wafer and ingot manufacturing units in India and is expected to support expanding solar project deployment across the country. Tata Power said the facility would strengthen domestic production of critical photovoltaic components and reduce reliance on imported wafers and ingots.

Tata Power selected Odisha after evaluating incentive packages and policy support from several states, with officials indicating competitive power costs and financial benefits improved project viability. The company said the location offered logistical advantages for supply chain integration and access to skilled labour in the region. Investment in upstream solar manufacturing, it added, is a strategic priority as India accelerates its renewable energy transition and seeks a resilient clean energy industrial base.
