THDCIL Starts Third Unit of Tehri Pumped Storage Plant

THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has begun commercial operations for the third 250 MW unit of the 1,000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), making it the largest variable-speed PSP developed by a Central Public Sector Enterprise. The Commercial Operation Date was initiated virtually from New Delhi by the Minister of Power, Sh. Manohar Lal.

Marking the occasion, the Minister noted that the commissioning of the third unit represents a significant national milestone, as Tehri houses India’s first variable-speed PSP—an important step towards strengthening the country’s clean energy transition and supporting the Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. He underlined the essential role of pumped storage in maintaining grid stability and ensuring reliable power supply as renewable energy deployment accelerates.

Minister of State for Power, Sh. Shripad Y Naik, commended THDCIL’s continued leadership in pumped-storage development and its contribution to national energy security. The Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Sh. Pankaj Agarwal, also congratulated the organisation for commissioning several major projects during the year.

The Tehri PSP demonstrates advanced variable-speed technology and high round-trip efficiency, reinforcing THDCIL’s position in modern hydropower development and enhancing India’s clean energy standing on the global stage.

The event was attended by senior officials including Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority, Sh. Gurdeep Singh, CMD of NTPC, and Sh. Sipan Kumar Garg, CMD of THDCIL.
