UK Finance Backs Blueleaf Energy to Expand Renewables in India

British International Investment (BII) has announced a partial syndication of its mezzanine debt investment in Blueleaf Energy to the Emerging Africa and Asia Infrastructure Fund (EAAIF), which is managed by Ninety One. The move is intended to support the power producer's next phase of growth and to accelerate India's clean energy transition with solar, wind and energy storage projects. The partnership brings together BII's development finance mandate and EAAIF's focus on climate-resilient infrastructure.

EAAIF will take 50 per cent of the 75 million (mn) dollar facility underwritten by BII, providing capital to accelerate project delivery. The investment is expected to support development of 850 megawatt (MW) of greenfield renewable energy capacity across India. BII will retain a 50 per cent stake and intends to mobilise further private capital over time.

Officials said the deal illustrates an originate-to-share approach under British Climate Partners, where early stage capital is deployed to unlock projects and institutional investors are brought in to scale them. By recycling capital and partnering with impact investors, the institutions aim to accelerate the build out of clean energy infrastructure while maximising impact. The transaction marks an expansion of EAAIF's climate infrastructure investments in Asia and represents the fund's third financing in India's renewable sector.

India has set a target of a 47 per cent reduction in emissions relative to its economic size by 2035, and the investment is framed as a contribution to that ambition. Blueleaf Energy plans to expand utility scale solar, wind and energy storage capacity, increasing the share of renewables in the national energy mix. Observers said the partnership could help attract additional private investment into climate infrastructure across the region.
