ZincFive Launches Advanced BMS for Nickel-Zinc Battery Systems

ZincFive, a provider of nickel-zinc (NiZn) battery-based solutions for immediate power applications, has launched the ZincFive Battery Management System (BMS), a next-generation platform designed specifically for its nickel-zinc battery technology. The system will support data centre operators, UPS original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators in monitoring and managing critical power infrastructure.

The ZincFive BMS will be standard across all ZincFive BC Series UPS Battery Cabinets. Developed around the specific characteristics of nickel-zinc chemistry, the platform avoids adapting systems originally designed for lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries, enabling a more streamlined approach to battery management.

The new BMS features a two-tier hardware architecture comprising the ZincFive Controller and ZincFive Tray Monitor. The system provides high-resolution telemetry across the battery cabinet while simplifying installation through reduced wiring complexity, elimination of third-party unmanaged network switches and faster system integration.

The Tray Monitor measures individual battery voltage and temperature through isoSPI protocol, reducing the requirement for additional data aggregation layers and enabling easier integration with data centre building management systems.

As AI workloads continue to increase power demands across data centres, the ZincFive BMS enables AI pulse intelligence in BC 2 AI UPS Battery Cabinets. The technology is designed to help systems respond to high-frequency power fluctuations associated with AI training and inference workloads.

The platform also incorporates advanced cybersecurity features, including encryption, authentication, secure communications and access controls. These capabilities are designed to support operational technology (OT) security requirements while providing improved visibility and control for mission-critical applications.

A redesigned user interface provides operators with fleet-wide monitoring capabilities, including state of charge, voltage tracking, time-series data, alarms, alerts and user permission management for multi-site deployments. The system also enables remote configuration and firmware updates.

“The ZincFive BMS reflects everything we’ve learned from managing and deploying nickel-zinc batteries at scale. By bringing development in-house and assembling the BMS in the U.S., we have greater control over the platform and how it evolves,” said Tod Higinbotham, CEO of ZincFive.
