Hyatt to Open 150-Room Hotel in Sikkim

Hyatt Hotels Corporation will foray into Sikkim with a new 150-room property in Gangtok, officials said. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang virtually laid the foundation stone for the development at Mintokgang, which forms part of the Suryavilas mixed-use project situated about two km from MG Marg on the road to Tsomgo Lake. The announcement is aimed at expanding upscale hospitality options in the state and aligning with broader efforts to develop tourism infrastructure.

The Himalayan state recorded over 1.7 mn tourist arrivals in 2025, including more than 71,000 foreign visitors, officials reported. Overall accommodation capacity in Sikkim ranges between 42,000 and 45,000 tourists per day, yet officials noted that premium inventory in central Gangtok remains limited and concentrated in a few locations. The hotel addition is intended to address that shortfall by offering higher-end rooms and facilities.

Hyatt Regency Gangtok will include multiple dining outlets, a spa, a swimming pool, fitness facilities and nearly 13,000 sq ft of meeting and event space to promote meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions tourism. A licensed casino facility is planned as part of the development, and operational plans will follow regulatory approvals. The precise investment figure for the project could not be immediately ascertained.

The chief minister indicated that the project reflects growing investor confidence in Sikkim's peaceful environment, progressive governance and potential as a premier destination in the Eastern Himalayas. He congratulated the SM Group, the Poddar Group and Hyatt on their collaboration and said the entry of a global hospitality brand would enhance international visibility, attract high-quality tourism and generate meaningful employment and skill-development opportunities for local youth. The state government affirmed its commitment to sustainable and responsible development that safeguards the fragile Himalayan ecosystem while pursuing economic growth.

"Join industry leaders at RAHSTA Expo, India's premier platform for roads, highways and traffic infrastructure. Register now to explore innovations, network with experts and shape the future of mobility."
