Bihar Floats Tender For Raxaul Airport Redevelopment

The Bihar government has moved the Raxaul Airport redevelopment project into its next phase by initiating a tender to appoint an engineering consultancy service firm for planned reconstruction near the India–Nepal border in East Champaran. The process seeks a firm to supervise detailed planning and execution of civil and airside works. The state has set a target completion date of June 2028 for the upgraded facility, which is intended to expand capacity and operational standards at the airport.

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has confirmed that the tender process is under way and indicated that the project forms part of a broader effort to provide national and international connectivity to border regions. He framed the redevelopment as a measure to facilitate smoother air travel in the Champaran area and to catalyse trade, tourism and the local economy. Authorities have positioned the initiative as a strategic investment in regional transport infrastructure.

Officials set out that the consultancy to be appointed will be responsible for supervising major infrastructure elements, including the runway, apron and taxiway, together with other airside facilities required for regular airport operations. The scope includes technical oversight during planning and execution stages, quality assurance and coordination with aviation regulators and contractors. The appointment is expected to streamline project delivery by consolidating design, compliance and construction supervision under a single technical advisor.

The redevelopment is envisaged to strengthen cross border connectivity along the India–Nepal corridor and to support increased commercial activity and visitor flows in northern Bihar. Local stakeholders expect improvements in logistical links and potential uplift for ancillary services that serve airport users and freight operators. The tender milestone marks a procedural advance for the scheme and sets the administration on course to realise the infrastructure upgrade within the stated timeframe.
