CWC To Organise Workshop On Flood Forecasting And DPR Guidelines

The Central Water Commission (CWC), under the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, is organising a one-day stakeholders workshop on flood forecasting services and guidelines for preparation and appraisal of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) on nine February 2026 from 10:00 to 17:30 at the CWC Library auditorium in R K Puram, New Delhi. The Secretary of the Department and the Chairman of the CWC, together with commission members and senior State government officers, will inaugurate the workshop.\n\nThe workshop will focus on sharing existing CWC services and recent initiatives with stakeholders and obtaining feedback to strengthen Centre-State coordination in flood forecasting, preparedness and flood management planning. Emphasis will be placed on promoting effective utilisation of the CWC forecasting and decision support services by State governments with support from concerned central organisations. Flood prone State governments will have opportunities to present their initiatives and explore synergy with CWC services.\n\nThe forenoon technical sessions will highlight CWC flood forecasting capabilities, including short range and seven day advisory forecasts, inundation forecasting, integrated reservoir operation support and glacier lake outburst flood monitoring. New initiatives to be discussed include applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning, use of extended range rainfall forecasts from the India Meteorological Department and developments in flash flood forecasting. State representatives will share experiences and operational challenges.\n\nThe afternoon session will concentrate on guidelines for preparation, submission and appraisal of DPRs for flood management and anti erosion works, with an emphasis on improving project quality and accelerating timely appraisals. Feedback from State participants will be solicited to inform revisions of the guidelines and to ensure that proposals meet technical and appraisal standards. Technical officers will discuss mechanisms for enhanced project readiness.\n\nThe workshop is expected to conclude with a session led by the Chairman of the CWC that will outline key takeaways and the way forward. Organisers anticipate that the event will contribute to improved flood preparedness, higher quality flood management proposals and strengthened institutional coordination consistent with the Government's focus on disaster resilience and climate-responsive water management.
