Delhi Plans Over 50 New And Upgraded Sewage Treatment Plants

Project documents show the plan includes 29 decentralised STPs, 13 new STPs under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and nine projects to upgrade existing STPs, with completion targeted between December 2027 and January 2028. Delhi currently has 37 sewage treatment plants, of which 28 upgraded plants with a capacity of 735 MGD are operational and nine are undergoing upgradation works scheduled for completion by January 2028. Among the nine upgradation projects, two have already been awarded and tenders have been received for the remaining seven.

The largest component comprises 29 decentralised STPs expected to add 170 MGD of treatment capacity in outer areas, with the projects estimated to cost Rs 31.52 billion (bn). Contracts for 13 of those projects have already been awarded and locations listed include Mitraon, Kakrola, Kanganheri, Dichaon Kalan and Jafarpur among others. The DJB has proposed 13 new STPs under the NMCG with a cumulative assessed capacity of 331.5 MGD and an estimated cost of Rs 53.40 bn, with detailed project reports submitted to the NMCG.

The board is upgrading nine existing STPs at sites such as Yamuna Vihar, Keshopur, Okhla, Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj at an estimated cost of Rs 12.44 bn. Officials indicated that these combined initiatives across decentralised works, new constructions and upgrades are intended to bolster treatment capacity and address catchment area needs. The schedule and funding remain subject to approvals and implementation timelines as outlined in the submitted documents.
