Henkel Achieves Carbon-Neutral Operations In India

Henkel has achieved carbon-neutral production at its Adhesive Technologies sites in Kurkumbh, India, and Gebkim, Türkiye, marking a major step in its global sustainability strategy. The company said both sites have eliminated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions through electrification, renewable energy sourcing and the removal of fossil fuel-based operations.

At Kurkumbh, Henkel replaced furnace oil-based thermic fluid heaters with high-efficiency electric systems, eliminating direct fossil fuel use at the site. The transition required upgrades to energy infrastructure, optimisation of heat loads, installation of advanced heat exchangers and investment in electrical capacity to support full electrification.

The Kurkumbh facility has also moved to 100 per cent renewable electricity, enabling the complete elimination of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions of approximately 11,300 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Henkel said the development marks a key milestone in the site’s decarbonisation journey.

At the Gebkim plant in Türkiye, Henkel replaced a natural gas-fired boiler with a high-efficiency electric boiler system. The transition removed direct fossil fuel use and reduced Scope 1 emissions to zero, resulting in an annual reduction of approximately 956 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

Simon Ulmann, VP Supply Chain and Operations IMEA, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said achieving carbon-neutral production at two key flagship sites in the India, Middle East and Africa region was an important step towards the company’s global sustainability ambitions. He said Henkel was systematically eliminating fossil fuels from operations and replacing them with electrified processes powered by renewable energy.

Bappa Bandyopadhyay, Director Operations and Projects India, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said the Kurkumbh milestone reflected the company’s commitment to sustainable growth, responsible manufacturing and operational excellence. He added that renewable energy adoption and efficiency improvements had helped reduce the site’s carbon footprint while maintaining safety, quality and performance standards.

Henkel said the scaling of electrification and renewable energy across its production network will support its broader net-zero ambition and help customers meet their sustainability goals. The company said the milestone demonstrates that fossil fuel-free manufacturing is achievable and scalable across regions.
