Maharashtra Acquires Mumbai Air India Building for Rs 16.01 bn

The Maharashtra government has taken possession of the iconic Air India building in Mumbai after completing a purchase for Rs 16,010 million (Rs 16.01 bn).

The state cabinet had approved the acquisition in November 2023 and the central government granted final approval in March 2024. The finance department transferred Rs 16,000 million to the Public Works Department in April to finalise agreements and consolidate offices in the 45,000 sqm structure.

Public Works Department Minister Shivendrasinh Bhosale was present at the formal transfer and instructed officials to conduct a comprehensive structural audit before any relocation of offices. He directed that all necessary repairs be undertaken and that interior renovation and other development works should commence only after structural safety concerns have been addressed. The minister emphasised that repair and refurbishment work must focus on quality and long-term sustainability.

He further instructed that electrical systems, fittings and other technical infrastructure meet high standards and that the building's main entrance be redesigned to reflect Maharashtra's heritage. The minister suggested engaging leading architects and expert agencies to guide the redesign and technical upgrades. Officials were asked to expedite administrative approvals required for renovation and ensure the timely completion of the project.

The state intends to develop the property as a model government complex to strengthen administrative infrastructure and reduce rental expenditure. Priority will be given to sustainability and citizen convenience while preparing the premises for use by various departments. The acquisition follows prior decisions to waive unrealised income and interest dues owed by the Air India Asset Holding Limited as part of the transfer arrangements.

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Chief Secretary Milind Mhaiskar and Mumbai City Collector Anchal Goyal attended the handover. Officials of Air India were also present, signalling formal completion of the transfer.
