Hindalco Lines Up Potential Rs One Trillion Investment

Hindalco Industries will invest Rs 500 billion (bn) in India over the next three years and is evaluating an additional Rs 500 bn, creating a potential Rs one trillion (tn) investment pipeline, company chair Kumar Mangalam Birla said at the company's 67th annual general meeting. He said the earmarked Rs 500 bn for strategic growth projects would lift the company's growth trajectory and strengthen its ability to meet domestic demand for metal solutions.\n\nBirla noted that investments span the value chain to build scale and resource security and to create future-ready capacity as domestic demand for advanced materials rises. The phased expansion of the Aditya smelter, which will add 374,000 tonnes (t), is progressing on schedule while a similar expansion at Mahan is under evaluation; together the projects would lift Hindalco's aluminium smelting capacity to over two million (mn) tonnes (t).\n\nThe company is also scaling up its copper business to meet rising demand from electrification, renewable energy and infrastructure development. The 50,000 tonne e-waste recycling facility at Vadodara has commenced operations and will ramp up through the year; plans aim to scale recycling capacity to 200,000 t and the 300,000 t smelter expansion at Dahej remains on track for FY29. With these investments Hindalco is building a one million (mn) tonne (t) integrated and downstream-led copper business and positioning itself as the second largest copper player globally outside China.\n\nBirla added that the Aditya alumina refinery expansion is progressing while coal production at the Chakla and Bandha captive mines is expected to start next year and the Meenakshi captive coal mine should go online by FY29. For Novelis the restart of Oswego and the upcoming commissioning of Bay Minette in the second half of 2026 are key milestones and Bay Minette will deepen presence in beverage packaging, automotive and speciality product markets while strengthening the US manufacturing footprint.
