Hindalco Starts India’s First Superfine PPT ATH Plant

Hindalco Industries has commissioned India’s first greenfield Superfine PPT ATH, or Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate, manufacturing plant at Belagavi in Karnataka, strengthening domestic production of speciality alumina used in fire-safety applications.

The facility has an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes and forms part of Hindalco’s Specialty Alumina portfolio. The company said the plant is the world’s only speciality alumina facility operating entirely on renewable energy.

PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame-retardant material used in Halogen-Free Flame Retardant cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. In cable applications, the material helps restrict flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases.

Demand for the material is being supported by tighter fire-safety standards, increasing adoption of electric vehicles and infrastructure development, and growing use of sustainable, high-performance materials. The Bureau of Indian Standards has also introduced IS 17048:2018 for HFFR cables, aligning domestic requirements with global safety standards.

The first phase of the Belagavi plant has been designed to cater to almost the entire domestic requirement for the material from the wire and cable industry. Hindalco has also provisioned the facility for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes per annum as market demand increases.

Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries, said the facility would strengthen the company’s leadership position and expand its high-value specialty alumina portfolio while supporting emerging requirements in Indian and global markets.

The plant has been developed through Hindalco’s in-house research and development programme and incorporates automated controls for critical processes. Its integrated manufacturing system is designed to maintain feedstock quality and product consistency.

Hindalco’s InnoSafe Superfine PPT ATH solution is manufactured at the company’s Belagavi refinery. The facility is powered entirely by renewable energy sourced from biomass, solar and wind, supporting lower-emission production of specialty materials.

The commissioning strengthens domestic capability for advanced fire-safe materials used across electrical, infrastructure and mobility applications while reducing dependence on imported Superfine PPT ATH.
