India Expands EV Charging Network and FAME II Sales

As on seven August 2026 the Ministry of Heavy Industries reported that India had installed 67,657 electric vehicle chargers across states and union territories, including 1,139 battery swapping station chargers. It said 1.672 million (mn) electric vehicles have been sold under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India Scheme Phase-II as of June. The ministry noted that 5,299 electric buses had been deployed under the scheme as on 31 July 2026. Data released by the ministry indicated that under FAME-I 0.28 mn EVs were supported, while the PM E-DRIVE initiative had supported the sale of 2.659 mn EVs. The Production Linked Incentive scheme for auto and auto components accounted for about 2.13 mn EV sales as of 31 March 2026 and the PM-eBus Sewa Payment Security Mechanism covered 27,555 e-buses as on 10 July 2026. Officials presented the cumulative figures to illustrate overlap and complementarity between demand incentives, purchase support and infrastructure deployment. The ministry highlighted that the GST on electric vehicles and their chargers and charging stations has been reduced to 5 per cent and that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced green licence plates for battery-operated vehicles, which are also exempt from permit requirements. FAME India Phase-II ran from one April 2019 to 31 March 2024 with a total budgetary outlay of Rs 115 billion (bn). The scheme provided demand incentives for e-2Ws, e-3Ws and e-4Ws, grants for e-buses and support for setting up EV public charging stations. Officials said the interventions were intended to accelerate adoption, expand charging infrastructure and support domestic manufacturing without offering projections or forecasts. The ministry therefore set out the present status of installations, sales and scheme coverage to inform policy monitoring and stakeholder planning.
