L&T Wins Key Order for Sagar Island Cable-Stayed Bridge

Larsen & Toubro has secured a significant order for its transportation infrastructure business to construct an arterial cable-stayed bridge over the Muri Ganga River in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The scope of work includes the construction of a 3.2-kilometre, 2+2 lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a maximum span of 177 metres. The project also involves building a 0.9-kilometre approach road on the Kakdwip side and a 0.65-kilometre approach road on the Sagar Island side. The bridge will be equipped with advanced traffic management systems, a bridge health monitoring system, architectural bridge lighting, hybrid street lighting and all essential road furniture.

The bridge is expected to be transformative for Sagar Island, providing direct, all-weather connectivity to the mainland. At present, access to the island relies heavily on ferry services, which are frequently disrupted during adverse weather conditions. The new link is set to benefit more than 0.2 million residents by improving mobility, access to healthcare and overall economic prospects.

The project is also expected to significantly boost pilgrimage travel by enabling safe and convenient access for millions of devotees who visit the annual Ganga Sagar Mela, regarded as the second-largest religious congregation in India after the Kumbh Mela.

Beyond social benefits, the bridge is anticipated to act as a catalyst for economic growth by promoting trade, tourism and local business activity, thereby reshaping the socio-economic landscape of Sagar Island and surrounding regions.
