Tata Electronics, Rohm Partner on Chip Manufacturing

Tata Electronics has entered into a strategic partnership with Japan’s Rohm Co to develop semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in India for both domestic and global markets, the companies said in a joint statement.

As an initial step, the two firms will establish a manufacturing framework for power semiconductors in India, combining Rohm’s device technologies with Tata Electronics’ semiconductor assembly and testing capabilities. The collaboration follows Tata Electronics’ recent partnership with Intel to explore manufacturing and packaging Intel products for local markets at its upcoming fabrication and semiconductor assembly and test facilities in Gujarat and Assam.

Under the agreement, Tata Electronics will assemble and test Rohm’s India-designed automotive-grade N-channel 100V, 300A silicon MOSFET in a TOLL package, with mass production shipments targeted from next year. The partnership will also leverage the sales networks of both companies to expand market reach in India and deliver higher-value solutions to a broad customer base.

The two companies will explore co-development of advanced packaging technologies over time and jointly market products manufactured through the collaboration. Rohm said the partnership would help expand its range of packaged products made in India while supporting the creation of a sustainable, region-based semiconductor supply chain.

Tata Electronics said its semiconductor assembly and test facilities will support Rohm in developing products tailored for Indian and global customers, strengthening supply chain resilience and opening new business opportunities.

Tata Electronics is currently developing India’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, with an investment of about $11 billion, along with the country’s first indigenous outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam, with an investment of around $3 billion.
