NTPC Mouda plant’s 500 MW unit lying idle

The NTPC Mouda plant's 500 MW has been lying idle for quite some time. The 1,000 MW plant has two 500 MW units. While the first generates on and off, the second is lying idle since months, as both states Maharashtra and Gujarat have started new units and no longer need NTPC's power. Another reason for not buying Mouda power is its high cost. The variable cost of the two units as per Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co Ltd (MSEDCL) is about 3.99 per unit. When the fixed cost is added, the figure reaches 5 per unit.
