Rourkela airport gets nod for expansion

Rourkela has received approval from the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) to upgrade the city's airport in advance of the men's FIH Hockey World Cup in January of next year. The airport received environmental clearance (EC) for expansion during the 93rd SEIAA meeting, which was presided over by its chairperson and former PCCF Sisir Kumar Ratho. While SAIL owns the airport, the airport's civil operations will be handled by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for a three-year period. The project is expected to cost Rs 500 million. According to sources, the proposal includes runway extension and strengthening, the construction of an ATC tower, the provision of a taxiway, and the construction of a prefabricated terminal building. A new toilet block and utility vehicle shed will be built, as well as an additional utility building for housekeeping and support staff.
