Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a Rs 1.5 billion (Rs 1.5 bn) flood mitigation project for Jorabat during the Budget Session of the state legislative assembly. The Detailed Project Report for the proposed Guwahati Ring Road has earmarked the funding specifically for flood control works in Jorabat and consultants have been instructed to prepare technical designs. The consultants have also been asked to secure approval from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the measures. The chief minister said recent flash floods had inundated several localities and disrupted traffic, highlighting the need for permanent engineering measures rather than temporary relief. The initiative is intended to provide a long-term solution to recurring flash floods and reduce risk once the works are completed. The chief minister expressed confidence that the project would substantially lower the incidence of flash flooding in the area. Addressing traffic congestion, the government noted that Jorabat has become one of Assam's busiest transport corridors due to its position on the Assam–Meghalaya border and increasing vehicular movement. To ease congestion the state has proposed widening the Digaru–Narangi road into a four-lane highway to provide an alternative approach for vehicles travelling from Jagiroad and nearby areas to Guwahati and to reduce pressure on the Jorabat junction. The chief minister urged legislators from the Dimoria and Dispur constituencies to support land acquisition and other requirements for the road expansion. The measures form part of a broader plan to strengthen urban infrastructure across the Guwahati metropolitan region, combining improved transport connectivity with better drainage systems and climate-resilient design. Implementation will follow finalisation of designs, technical approvals and necessary land arrangements to enable construction. Officials indicated the package aims to integrate flood control with transport upgrades to deliver durable benefits for residents and commuters.
