GBA Clears Encroachments Along 47 km of City Roads

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) carried out a footpath clearance drive across Bengaluru on Wednesday as officials from the five city corporations removed encroachments and worked to improve pedestrian infrastructure. The operation deployed heavy machinery including a JCB to dismantle kiosks and structures obstructing footpaths in Bengaluru West City Corporation limits. The drive covered 47 km of arterial and sub-arterial roads and sought to restore continuous pedestrian passage and accessibility for residents and visitors.

GBA officials coordinated operations with municipal ward officers and staff from the five corporations to map encroachment sites and schedule clearances with minimal disruption to traffic. Teams removed street vending structures, illegal kiosks and items blocking ramps and kerbs while ensuring lawful disposal of debris and materials. The exercise included measures to secure pedestrian crossings and to maintain access for emergency services during working hours.

The campaign is part of an ongoing city initiative to enhance walkability and public safety by reclaiming pedestrian space. Officials conducted inspections to verify that cleared areas allow unobstructed movement and have indicated plans for follow-up inspections and enforcement to prevent re-encroachment. Community engagement efforts will be undertaken to inform traders and residents about designated vending zones and municipal rules governing street infrastructure. Temporary signage and demarcation were installed at key locations to guide pedestrians during the clearance.

Authorities acknowledged that the operation caused short-term inconvenience to some vendors and said arrangements would be made to address legitimate livelihoods within the framework of municipal regulations. Officials emphasised that sustained monitoring and coordination between the Greater Bengaluru Authority and city corporations is intended to deliver safer and more accessible pavements for all pedestrians across the urban area. Periodic patrols and a reporting mechanism have been planned to ensure compliance and prompt response to fresh encroachments.
