GMDA to Spend Rs 86 mn on Green Belts Along Seven Gurugram Roads

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will spend Rs 86 mn to develop, upgrade and maintain green areas along seven key sector-dividing roads in the city after three tenders were floated, officials said. The project is intended to create landscaped stretches that can absorb additional rainwater runoff and reduce waterlogging during the monsoon. Contractors will be given six months to complete development work and 36 months of maintenance obligations.

GMDA chief executive officer PC Meena stated that green areas will be established along sector-dividing roads in sectors 47/49, 47/50, 43/53, 43/52A, 44/52, 45/52 and 46/51 as part of a broader effort to strengthen the city’s green infrastructure. The authority has already undertaken preparatory work at several locations by removing debris and accumulated material. Ground levels were lowered at selected spots to facilitate the flow of rainwater into the newly formed green belts.

The development work will involve planting good quality trees and shrubs and ensuring their care for three years as part of the maintenance contract. Landscaped stretches will be designed to function as bio-retention areas to improve drainage and reduce surface runoff during intense rain. Officials indicated that such measures will complement existing stormwater management systems and aim to mitigate the risk of localised flooding.

Once implemented and properly maintained, the proposed green belts are expected to act as green lungs for surrounding urban neighbourhoods, contributing to improved air quality and enhancing the visual environment amid the city’s expanding built-up areas. The initiative is framed as an effort to provide much needed green spaces while addressing practical drainage concerns, and the authority will monitor contractor performance under the maintenance period. The project timelines and tender conditions reflect a focus on both immediate landscaping outcomes and sustained upkeep.
