Guwahati Ring Road gets Rs 57.3B push to ease traffic, boost logistics

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded a Rs 57.3 billion contract for the construction of the 121-km Guwahati Ring Road, a long-pending project aimed at easing traffic and improving regional connectivity across Assam. The agreement was signed with Infracon Pvt Ltd under the DBFOT model, with a 30-year concession period, including four years for construction.

Work is expected to begin after the 2025 monsoon, with the ring road designed to divert freight and inter-state traffic away from the city. The project will be developed in three phases—starting with a 55.54-km greenfield corridor from Baihata Chariali to Sonapur, followed by the widening of a 7.76-km NH-27 stretch, and capped by the upgrade of another 58 km of NH-27, along with a 3-km Brahmaputra bridge.

The project is expected to decongest Guwahati, reduce pollution, and enhance logistics efficiency across the Northeast. It also aligns with the Gati Shakti plan, aiming to boost multimodal transport and expand market access in the region.
