L&T wins Mumbai underground road tunnel project

L&T Construction's Heavy Civil Infrastructure division has achieved a significant milestone by securing a prestigious contract from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MDA). This contract entails the design and construction of an Underground Road Tunnel Project that will span from Orange Gate, Eastern Free Way to the Marine Drive Coastal Road in Mumbai.

The scope of this substantial project is extensive and involves the utilisation of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for the construction of twin road tunnels. These tunnels will connect seamlessly to the existing elevated Eastern Freeway at Orange Gate, near its southern terminal, through a system of transition ramps. Additionally, the tunnels will extend their reach to link up with the bustling Marine Drive in Mumbai.

The underground project's alignment will primarily run beneath the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road, and the entire endeavour is slated for completion within a timeline of 54 months. This achievement underscores L&T's remarkable capability to develop faster and more reliable mass transit systems, aligning perfectly with the company's strategic objectives.

This significant undertaking represents not only a testament to L&T Construction's engineering prowess but also a noteworthy contribution to the enhancement of Mumbai's infrastructure. It underscores the company's dedication to building infrastructure that not only meets the immediate needs of urban development but also aligns with sustainable and efficient transportation systems. As Mumbai continues to grow, projects like these are vital to ensuring the city's connectivity and facilitating smoother and more convenient commuting for its residents.
