NHAI to Use 3D Sensors for Road Quality Mapping

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will deploy advanced 3D sensors and data acquisition systems across 23 States to identify potholes and cracks along more than 20,000 km of highways. The initiative aims to enhance road quality, safety, and commuter experience through data-driven maintenance.
Specially equipped vehicles will collect detailed surface data using 3D laser-based technology, GPS, and motion sensors that measure acceleration and angular velocity. The collected data will be uploaded to NHAI’s AI-based portal, Data Lake, for expert analysis to generate actionable insights.
The exercise will cover all two- to eight-lane highway projects, with data collected before construction begins and at six-month intervals thereafter. The findings will support road inventory management, infrastructure planning, and long-term maintenance under the Road Asset Management System.
NHAI has also been addressing accident-prone “black spots” nationwide, completing long-term rectification at over 5,000 of the 13,795 identified locations.
