PWD Proposes Elevated Flyovers To Ease Delhi Traffic

The Public Works Department has proposed two elevated flyovers to ease congestion and improve connectivity across West, North West, North East and Central Delhi. One will link Britannia Chowk to the Outer Ring Road via Shakur Basti Railway Station while the other will run over the Karawal Nagar drain from Ankur Enclave to Gokulpuri Metro station. Officials said the measures aim to cut delays at busy junctions.

Britannia Chowk was described as a node serving mixed residential and commercial areas with heavy pedestrian movement near malls and metro stations, contributing to peak delays. The elevated link is expected to reduce load on the existing Britannia Chowk flyover and on inner residential roads, easing movement between western and northern corridors and responding to residents' complaints and traffic police observations.

In North East Delhi the PWD has proposed a five-km-long elevated stretch over the Karawal Nagar drain to connect Ankur Enclave with Gokulpuri Metro station, traversing densely populated localities such as Karawal Nagar and Dayalpur. Officials noted that narrow, encroached roads, roadside parking and busy markets force buses and e-rickshaws to compete for limited space, causing frequent bottlenecks. A tender has been issued for a feasibility study and detailed project report.

The tendering stage is expected to take a month after which civil work will be awarded. The authority also plans a 1.8-km cable-stayed flyover between Azadpur and Delhi University North Campus as part of an elevated Ring Road project, a second cable-stayed bridge after the Signature Bridge. The structure is planned because an underground tunnel is unviable in the constrained stretch.

Officials said the bridge is expected to be completed by 2030 and that the elevated corridor will be developed along the existing 55-km Ring Road in phases, with a 25-km section divided into three parts: Azadpur Chowk to Metcalfe House junction (seven km), Majnu Ka Tila to Salimgarh Fort (five km) and a phase to the DND Flyway. They added that 46 per cent of Ring Road traffic passes through the cited stretch daily, underlining the need for alternative arterial routes.
