Reliance Industries is set to develop a 70-hectare green public space along Mumbai’s Coastal Road, with work expected to begin after the monsoon. The Rs 400-crore project will transform reclaimed land between Priyadarshini Park, Mahalaxmi, Haji Ali and Worli into a continuous waterfront landscape.New York-based landscape architecture firm James Corner Field Operations has been selected to design the project. The first phase is expected to take 18-24 months. The proposed development includes forests, gardens, recreational grounds, pedestrian spaces, sports facilities, children’s play areas and public plazas. Nearly 60,000 trees are planned, with 55 per cent of the area proposed as wooded landscape and another 25 per cent as recreational grounds. The landscape strategy will focus on native coastal ecology, with plant species selected to withstand salt spray, strong winds and saline soil. Other proposed elements include shaded promenades, amphitheatres, sports courts and a large public plaza near Mahalaxmi. The project is intended to create a continuous public waterfront while adding substantial green and recreational infrastructure along the city’s reclaimed coastal land.
