Toll Collection At Gomangalam Puthur Deferred By One Week

The National Highways Authority of India has postponed commencement of toll collection at the Gomangalam Puthur toll plaza on the Pollachi-Dindigul national highway by about a week owing to pending safety audits and final finishing works. The plaza had been scheduled to begin collecting fees from eight am on or after July eight but the start has been deferred. NHAI officials indicated the process is expected to commence within the next seven to 10 days.

The Pollachi-Dindigul four-lane highway covers 132 km and was executed at an estimated cost of Rs 46,990 million (mn) and developed in three packages. The Kamalapuram–Oddanchatram section of 37 km was completed at a cost of Rs 13,190 mn, the Oddanchatram–Madathukulam stretch of 45 km at Rs 16,080 mn and the Madathukulam–Pollachi section of 50 km at Rs 17,720 mn. Major construction works have been completed but the mandatory safety audit and finishing activities remain.

A senior NHAI official said once formalities were completed toll collection would begin and the authority expected the process to commence in about 10 days. Local opposition to the plaza location has intensified with Pollachi MLA K Nithyanandhan submitting petitions to the NHAI and district administration seeking exemption for residents. He argued that under NHAI norms tolls should be charged only for vehicles using the newly constructed bypass.

The MLA warned the present placement at Gomangalam Puthur would compel residents, farmers, daily commuters and small traders using the main road to pay despite not utilising the bypass and that positioning the plaza near the junction where the bypass merges could cause long vehicle queues, traffic congestion and an increased risk of accidents. Members of the CPI(M) urged relocation or full exemption for people living within a 20-km radius, while NHAI suggested local people avail a subsidised monthly pass.
